5 Tips on How to Get Toddlers to Eat More Fruits and Veggies

Posted by Belina Lizarzabal on

Having a picky eater at home makes me very sensitive to this topic. My son barely ate any fruit or veggies until now, that he is 5.5 years old. The secret: never giving up! I am sure many of you can relate to this, and can understand how frustrating the situation can be for a mom.

Also an important tip to succeed in the process, is to try different kinds of fruits, especially those in season, to offer the best taste and flavor possible to your picky eater.

5 Tips on how to get your toddler to eat more veggies and fruits

Involve the kids in the prep. My son absolutely LOVES to be my kitchen helper, and that increases the chances of him trying a new ingredient. I also use the time to talk about all the vitamins and benefits of the ingredient we are preparing, and those facts are always fascinating to my toddler.

Use fresh ingredients and a mild-flavor lettuce, like butter lettuce. Other kinds like arugula may be too peppery or bitter flavor for a toddler to try at first. Photo Credit: Super Healthy Kids

Cut fruits and veggies in small pieces. It is key to make it easy for your toddler to chew and avoid any choking hazard. You can cut cherry tomatoes and grapes in half, cucumbers in half circles, or even use small cookie cutters with fun shapes like stars or hearts… they are magic! Photo Credit: Madigan Made

Use a yummy dressing. Use familiar flavors so that your kid is more comfortable eating the salad. Amy from Super Healthy Kids made an orange creamsicle dressing definitely worth trying. Photo Credit: Super Healthy Kids

Serve it in a fun way. Remember kids love to play and have fun all the time. Be creative and make it visually appealing to your toddler! A personalized plate like our Owl be Yours 10" Personalized Plate or placemat can also do the trick.
