Healthy Wednesday #5: Dragon Fruit
Posted by
onI love going to Doral farmers’ market on Sundays, not only to support local farms and businesses, but because every time i go I discover something new and delicious.
Last Sunday, while I was buying some veggies and fruits, I finally decided to ask about the dragon fruit. I’ve seen it in cooking shows and an exotic ingredient, but honestly was kind of “afraid” to even ask about it to the market guy… I had no clue what it tasted like or how it looked like in the inside!
Well, little I knew how delicious and super good-for-you this dragon fruit is! Also known as pitaya, the dragon fruit tastes like a mix between kiwi and green apple. I researched online, and found out that the dragon fruit is packed with antioxidants, fiber, calcium, phosphorus, and lots of vitamins C, B vitamins, and beta-carotene. Another benefit of this superfruit is that it may help you lower your cholesterol, and boost your good cholesterol levels.
I love its gorgeous magenta skin color, and the contrasting white with edible little black seeds pulp. I was amazed on how easy it was to cut it through, and the skin peels off really easily. You should only eat the white pulp with the seeds, and make sure you remove any residual pink parts, which are kind of bitter.
Although it is not that easy to find on regular supermarkets, you are most likely to find it on asian and organic markets. If you have a local farmers’ market, make sure to check it out and you’ll be surprised of their offerings.
Now you know: the dragon fruit is a very exotic and super healthy fruit to try! I am definitely going to add it to my smoothie tomorrow morning.
Happy Wednesday!
